Stage-Based Behavioral Counseling for STD/HIV Prevention

This three-day training is a skills-based training in the use of Stage-based Behavioral Counseling (SBC), which is an adaptation of the Stage of Change and the Trans-theoretical Model (SOC/TTM) of behavioral change theory.

During this training, participants will:

  • Learn how to use Stage-based Behavioral Counseling for STD/HIV risk reduction counseling and HIV pre and post-test counseling services;
  • Learn new counseling strategies beyond STD/HIV education to facilitate behavior change in both HIV positive and negative individuals, in clinic or community-based settings; and
  • Develop and practice skills in the use of Stage-based Behavioral Counseling by practicing with trained "client" instructors.


Prerequisite: None.

Audience: Counselors, outreach workers, case managers, health care professionals, clinicians and other front-line service providers.
